Departments

A department is one part of your organisation, such as Finance & Accounting or Technical Services. In VirgilTrack, people, risks and strategic initiatives belong to departments, so a department’s page shows how that part of the organisation is doing.

  • A person can belong to only one department. Your department decides, for example, which colleagues you see in the Team: bar under the header. (The CEO sees everyone there.)
  • A department can have more than one manager. A manager can also manage departments other than the one they belong to.
  • Belonging to a department is not the same as reporting to someone. Who reviews your weekly work report depends on your reporting line, which is set separately. See Reporting lines and roles.
  • Risks and initiatives belong to departments. Risks are recorded for a department, and initiatives in the strategic plan are given to the department that carries them out. A department’s page brings them together.
  • The CEO’s own department isn’t listed. At sign-up, the CEO is placed in a department called Executive Suite. It doesn’t appear on the Departments page.

If you try to open a department that isn’t yours, VirgilTrack says “Only the CEO, administrators, and this department’s own people can open it.”

Your organisation’s departments are named when it signs up to VirgilTrack, on the Department Details step of the sign-up form. Each department appears in VirgilTrack when the first person invited to it sets up their account. See Sign up your organisation.

VirgilTrack has no button for adding a new department later. The CEO and administrators can rename a department and change its description. See Manage a department.

Select Departments in the menu on the left. Everyone sees this menu item.

  • The Departments page: every department on one card, with its manager, progress, risks and money at risk.
  • A department’s page: one department in detail: what needs attention, its people, its work this year and its open risks.
  • Manage a department: for the CEO and administrators: choose managers, add and move people, and rename a department.
